Talking to the Tower

This page is a sample of how to speak to the tower:

GridTalkie radios allow you to access the full Air traffic controller system without having to join a group. The air traffic control system works on one of 2 pre-installed channel, Grid-WIDE ATC or Blake ATC, these channels will allow you to communicate with the ATC Tower at any airport listed on our Airport ICAO code page. The retail version of GridTalkie has 3 tuners, many preprogrammed channels including the one used here and 10,000 additional channels to choose from. 

GridTalkie makes it is easy to broadcast, just type /3 before the request and you’re on the air.

Wear Gridtalkie radio and use as follows:

The Free radio is set to GRID-ATC, a channel from the pre-programed list of channels for this example we chosen GRID-ATC for tuner A.

You can use your Flight name or your Pilot Name followed by a comma and ATC will respond using that name.

We will use the EXAMPLE airport call sign: SLRM

Example pilot call-sign used below: PILOT-1

REQUEST SYNTAX GRIDTALKIE Radio: 

/3 SLRM, <Pilot call-sign>, <request>

IF YOU MAKE A INVALID REQUEST TOWER WILL SAY : Please repeat your last transmission, you are breaking up.

Requests containing the words: radio-check, gridtalkie,radio check, test, comms, communications, comms check

Roger that

Requests containing the words: roger, RGT, roger that, copy, copy that, message received , received , instructions received

> ATC Tower will NOT RESPOND as you are responding to it.

STARTUP CLEARANCE

Requests containing the words: start, startup, ignition, EXAMPLE:

/3 SLRM, PILOT-1, at gate 2 requesting engines startup < Local chat wearing radio.

> ATC Tower will grant startup clearance.

TAXI

Requests containing the words: taxi EXAMPLE:

/3 SLRM, PILOT-1, requesting taxi for active runway < Local chat wearing radio.

> ATC Tower will respond with taxi clearance and designated departure runway.

TAKEOFF CLEARANCE (RUNWAY)

Requests containing the words: takeoff, takeof, takeofff, take off, depart, departure, EXAMPLE:

/3 SLRM, PILOT-1, holding on runway request takeoff clearance < Local chat wearing radio.

> ATC Tower will respond with wind status and departure clearance.

APPROACH

Requests containing the words: <something> to/for SLRM ETA <something>, <something> to/for SLDA <something> ETA <something> ,EXAMPLE:

/3 SLRM, PILOT-1, on approach for SLRM from (somewhere) eta 5 mins < Local chat wearing radio.

> ATC Tower will respond as approach with copy of eta and directions to landing runway, telling to report back for landing clearance.

LANDING (RUNWAY)

Requests containing the words: landing, land, EXAMPLE:

/3 SLRM, Flight Name, request landing permissions < Local chat wearing radio.

> ATC Tower will respond with wind status and grant landing permissions

LANDING (HELIPAD)

Requests containing the words: landing, land COMBINED WITH helipad, heli, helo, EXAMPLE:

/3 SLRM, Name Heli, request landing at helipad < Local chat wearing radio.

> ATC Tower will give warning to watch for traffic and approve landing at pilot's discretion.

TAKEOFF CLEARANCE (HELIPAD)
Requests containing the words: takeoff, takeof, takeofff, take off, depart, departure COMBINED WITH helipad, heli, helo, EXAMPLE:

/3 SLRM, Flight Name, requesting heli takeoff < Local chat wearing radio.

> ATC Tower will give liftoff clearance.
